"Delivering the Vision for Desktop Color Reproduction At Hallmark Cards"

Abstract

Desktop Publishing was built on the notion that one person could do everything - create, scan, edit, design, and assemble creative content; push a button, and out would come great color reproduction that matched the original color intent of Design. The original vision for color reproduction, as promised by the Desktop Publishing revolution over 12 years ago, required significant technical advances and evolutionary changes for Hallmark to accomplish this goal.

The inexorable quest to develop a “Push-Button” color reproduction system - that maintains Hallmark’s legacy for quality color reproductions – was not easy to accomplish with off-the-shelf solutions alone. The effort required developing a true RGB workflow, proprietary Color Management tools, and a new universal RGB reference space profile based on the optimal intersection of color gamuts between Creative and the Press.

The result is a color reproduction workflow that is a transparent part of the Design process – helping Hallmark to bridge the gap between Creative color intent and the final Printed product. This paper briefly shares the history of Hallmark’s wide-gamut, fluorescent, multi-color printing inks, and discusses some of the technical solutions that are helping Hallmark to reduce costs, increase speed, and provide flexibility in the production workflow for ink-on-paper products.
